Transboundary waters, conflicts and international cooperation - examples of the La Plata basin

Isabela Battistello Espíndola and Wagner Costa Ribeiro

Water International, 2020, vol. 45, issue 4, 329-346

Abstract: This article details the case of the La Plata basin, a transboundary basin shared between Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. By addressing some cases of disputes between local and state actors in the La Plata basin, we show that even with an institutional framework for cooperation and transboundary water management, conflicts and tension might remain between riparian states.
