Water International, 2025, vol. 50, issue 7, 703-729

Abstract: There is a poor understanding of innovation adoption choices in the Global South. This study aims to understand (i) innovations stakeholders were aware of and adopted, (ii) adoption drivers, (iii) adoption challenges, (iv) continued use and (v) adaptation decisions. The determinants of adoption framework are applied. The study finds that stakeholders were most aware of and adopted innovations related to soil moisture and nutrient monitoring tools. Irrigators mainly adopted innovations due to trialability and observability. Government stakeholders adopted innovations due relative advantage and trialability. Stakeholders faced adoption challenges; there was, however, evidence of innovation adaptation and continued use.
