Effects of user movement and target placement on target selection during walking

Abstract: Target selection, as a fundamental interaction operation in virtual reality (VR), is influenced by various interaction factors. Previous research has largely focused on investigating target selection in stationary states, while little attention has been given to target selection during walking. Therefore, this study conducted experiments using walking-in-place to explore the effects of user movement and target placement on the efficiency and accuracy of target selection during walking. The results reveal that excessive path curvature significantly decreases the accuracy of target selection, while different walking directions affect the difficulty of target selection. To enhance the efficiency and accuracy of target selection, we summarised a set of design insights based on the research findings. These insights provide a reference for the design of interaction scenarios involving target selection during walking for relevant personnel, thereby offering a certain application value in improving the human-computer interaction experience.
