Effect of digital technologies on employee wellbeing and mental health

Abstract:
This study investigated the effect of digital technologies on the mental health and well-being of employees in the South African financial services sector, utilising the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. The quantitative research, comprising a sample of 174 employees from financial services organisations in South Africa, was obtained through convenience sampling, and data were collected via an online survey questionnaire. The data were subsequently analysed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to test the formulated hypotheses. The study demonstrated that performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, and social influence were significant determinants of digital technology adoption among users in financial services organisations. Furthermore, the study identified a positive correlation between digital technologies and employee mental health and well-being, elucidating the interdependent relationship between technology adoption and employee outcomes. By examining the relationship between digital technologies, employee mental health, and well-being in the financial services sector in South Africa, this research contributes significantly to existing knowledge. It emphasises the importance of recognising and addressing the impact of technology on employee well-being in the workplace, a crucial consideration in improving the implementation of digital technologies in the financial services sector.
