Environmental economics in UK environmental policy: Defra's 25 Year Environment Plan

Abstract: Defra (UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) published its 25 Year Environment Plan in January 2018. The Plan sets out the Government's goals for improving the environment with the ambition to leave a better environment for the next generation. It places natural capital at the very centre of its approach to future environmental policy. This paper draws on a speech given by Defra's Chief Economist to the annual applied environmental economics conference, envecon, in March 2018. It sets out a broad overview of the 25 Year Environment Plan, how natural capital underpins it, and the value of environmental economics in making environmental policy.
