Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications, 2014, vol. 28, issue 8, 989-998

Abstract: Nowadays, more attention has been placed on the chassis modes of electrically small antennas. Besides the antenna radiating element itself, the chassis (ground plane) also has non-negligible contribution to the performance of the antenna system. Properly exciting chassis modes can effectively expand antenna’s working bandwidth and improve its radiation efficiency. In this paper, a novel approach of exciting chassis modes will be demonstrated numerically and practically. It can be seen that by tuning the ground plane geometry, desired chassis mode is excited and the antenna performance is improved.
