Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications, 2018, vol. 32, issue 13, 1654-1663

Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid radar system that incorporates a wideband Boolean-chaos mode and a phase-based Doppler mode for human localization and life signal (respiration and heartbeat) monitoring. The measurement principle and signal-processing technology allow this radar to work simultaneously at two different modes for different purposes. The wideband Boolean-chaos mode is responsible for accurate range detection while the phase-based Doppler mode is utilized for life signal monitoring. Experimental results show that the proposed hybrid radar can realize the simultaneous detection for range and life signal with high-range resolution, high sensitivity, and large dynamic range. The down-range resolution and dynamic range for range detection behind a 20-cm-thick wall are 15 cm and 50 dB, respectively. Meanwhile, the dynamic ranges for heartbeat and respiration detection are 10 and 50 dB, respectively.
