Broadband subarray microstrip antenna using a parasitic ring slot for CP-SAR application

Abstract:
This work presents a 2 × 2 broadband subarray microstrip antenna incorporating a parasitic ring slot. The primary goal of this research is to optimize the impedance and axial ratio bandwidth of the circularly polarized antenna. The proposed antenna is intended to operate over the C band with a center frequency of 5.3 GHz, making it suitable for Circularly Polarized Synthetic Aperture Radar (CP-SAR) applications. The antenna consists of a two-layer substrate with a ground plan at the bottom, an elliptical radiator in the center, and a ring slot at the top. The antenna has an excellent impedance bandwidth for both simulation and measurement, which are 1.31 GHz (25.3%) and 1.59 GHz (29.3%), respectively. Furthermore, the bandwidth of the axial ratio performs adequately at 0.74 GHz (14.3%) and 0.97 GHz (18.6%) for simulation and measurement, respectively. It provides a potential alternative for the manufacturing of wideband antennas while remaining small and cost-effective. With such outstanding performance, the antenna meets the CP-SAR antenna specification.
