Abstract:
In this paper, a circularly polarized (CP) microstrip patch antenna based on a metasurface (MS) is proposed. The antenna has a compact structural shape, stable high gain, and wide axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW). The designed antenna has a two-layer structure with one layer of radiating patch and one layer of MS containing an array of 3 × 3 nonuniform patches. The MS is on top of the radiating patch. The radiating unit consists of a patch with square overlapping slots and four L-shaped parasitic branches. By exciting the radiating patch, the hybrid MS can generate three AR minima, which extends the ARBW as well as enhances the antenna gain. Final experiments (simulations) show that the antenna achieves an impedance bandwidth of 16.9 (19.3) % of – 10 dB, as well as achieves a 3 dB ARBW of 9.5 (10.1) %. In addition, the antenna achieves a stabilized gain of 7.8-8.6 (7.4-8.7) dBic.
