Abstract:
Barr and Kantor introduced a batting performance measure for limited overs cricket combining the batting average and the strike rate. The measure though logically novel, has some flaws in it. This paper identifies some such faults, correct them and redefines the measure retaining the original combination of batting average and strike rate. Currently, two formats of limited-overs cricket are played at the international level- One-day International (ODI) and Twenty20, the later was not in existence when the measure was introduced. Furthermore, the paper proposes format-specific batting performance measures, accomplished by altering only the value of a parameter, while the functional form of the redefined measure is unaffected. Taking the ICC rating of batsmen as the gold standard, the parameter controlling the relative importance of the batting average and strike rate are determined afresh for ODI and Twenty20 formats. The study finds that both in ODI and Twenty20 the batting average earns more weightage than the strike rate, however, the later gains more importance in the Twenty20 format than in the ODI.
