Discrete event conversion of microscopic model based on minimizing the number of time intervals

Abstract: Microscopic traffic simulation using fixed time intervals imposes substantial computational demands. A more efficient approach involves calculating future vehicle positions and redesigning an event-based simulation framework. This paper introduces a transition from fixed time intervals to an event-based structure, where events are defined as changes in vehicle acceleration. The Gipps microscopic model is restructured to facilitate this transformation, leading to significant computational savings while maintaining simulation accuracy. The proposed method models dynamic changes and interactions within the traffic system, necessitating a reconfiguration of the Gipps velocity model into an event-based formulation. Identifying scenarios that trigger acceleration changes and developing corresponding mathematical models are essential steps in this process. The event-driven structure efficiently represents the traffic system, focusing only on state changes and omitting periods without significant dynamics, thus reducing complexity. Experimental results demonstrate that the event-based approach effectively minimizes computation without compromising simulation precision.
