Examining School Escorting Travel Behaviors from the Perspective of the Trip Chain

Abstract: School trips of schoolchildren usually require family escort and accompaniment. Only by conducting a comprehensive analysis from the perspective of the trip chain can we understand the similarities and differences in school transportation. A series of statistical analyses were conducted on the school escorting travel behaviors. Accordingly, sub-classification of the two trip chain types was defined and their trip chain lengths were compared. Subsequently, gender and age group differences for escort guardians were studied. The results suggest that: (1) Significant differences exist in activities and trips between escorting to and from school. (2) There is a significant association between escort choices, duration of escort activities, and escort modes with the trip chain type. (3) The average trip chain length of the household-care trip chain and its sub-types are significantly greater than those of the work trip chain. (4) Gender, age group, and escort choice significantly influence the trip chain type.
