The International Professional Perspective: Gifted Curriculum at Secondary Levels through Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate

Linda D. Avery

Gifted and Talented International, 1998, vol. 13, issue 2, 90-93

Abstract: This article focuses on two internationally recognised programs which provide high-powered curricular interventions for academically advanced secondary students. One is the Advanced Placement program, in use in high schools in more than 50 countries, and the other is the International Baccalaureate Diploma program, deployed by secondary schools in 90 countries around the world Both programs are acclaimed for having high standards, rigorous curriculum, and accountabilityfor results. The article first presents a brief overview of each program and summarizes student participation and performance data drawn from recent reports provided by the parent organisations of the programs. Differences between the two programs are then considered as well as the relevance of the programs for gifted students. The article concludes by encouraging local school districts to give full consideration to these programs for secondary gifted students.
