Holistic Counseling of Gifted Adolescents in Singapore: Three Case Studies

Abstract: Intellectually gifted pupils in Singapore are generally blessed with supportive parents who are constantly concerned with their development and attainment. In addition, the Gifted Education Branch of the Ministry of Education has provided these pupils with an enriched and challenging curriculum. Nevertheless, individual differences among the gifted are of such a wide range that individual attention needs to be given to the pupils in the form of guidance and counseling in times of stress. Counseling gifted adolescents in this study took the form of a holistic approach of first identifying a possible lack of development in four main areas: intellect (mind), emotions (heart), physical health (body), and morality and spirituality (soul). This was followed by prescriptions for growth in identified area(s). Next, individualized recommendations for acquisition of self-knowledge and execution of volition for personal development were made. Counseling vignettes of three gifted pupils in the secondary schools are featured as case studies. Implications for practice and research are also explicated.
