The Canadian Contribution to Gifted Education: A Comparative Analysis of Prominent Themes

Abstract:
Over 250 separate journal articles and books written by Canadian citizens or residents were reviewed to identify Canadian themes in giftedness and gifted education between 1901 and 2000. To qualify as an appropriate publication for this research, the term “gifted,” “giftedness,” “creativity” or some other related term must have been used in either the title or the abstract as indexed in ERIC and the National Library of Canada databases. The five most prominent themes were then compared with themes found in a random sample of 229 international publications. In general, there were similarities in the areas of strategies, programs and identification, but differences in the areas of creativity and self-concept, which were more extensively represented in the Canadian literature.
