Abstract:
Although DEI efforts in higher education are under attack, institutional leaders can still maneuver through these restrictive and precarious legislative environments (RPLEs) to protect and advance equity on their campuses. In this article, we offer a refinement of the shared equity leadership (SEL) framework to support leaders as they navigate RPLEs. SEL is a collaborative leadership model that distributes responsibilities for equity campus-wide through embedding equity work in various roles instead of concentrating them in DEI-specific offices or staff positions. We suggest that SEL represents a pragmatic utopian approach to navigating RPLEs, one in which the hope for a more just and equitable future is balanced with a clear-eyed pragmatism about navigating current restrictions and opposition. In addition to this theoretical reframing, we present empirical data to provide support for these claims using a modified Delphi interview method to get expert feedback on how the SEL model may look similar or different in these constrained contexts.
