The use of generative artificial intelligence in K-12 education: An introduction to the special issue of the Journal of Educational Research

Louis S. Nadelson

The Journal of Educational Research, 2025, vol. 118, issue 6, 531-534

Abstract: To open this special issue of The Journal of Educational Research, I have collected a range of research reports on teaching and learning with generative artificial intelligence (GAI). To guide readers in exploring the contents of this special issue, I have provided a summary of each of the included research reports. I have organized the articles by educational context to provide readers with additional context for the articles and enhance the potential for translating the research into practice. I open and conclude my introduction by positioning the adoption of GAI as considering and exploring GAI in K‑12 learning as an educational innovation and the opportunities and limitations for embracing GAI as a tool for learning and teaching.
