Abstract:
Marriage remains a crucial social institution, yet the occurrence of divorce has risen in many regions, including Puntland, Somalia. This study examined the major factors contributing to divorce among married couples in Puntland. A sample of 95 divorced individuals was chosen using snowball sampling, and the data were analyzed with STATA 14 and SPSS 26. Findings show that domestic violence (71.58%), financial difficulties (92.63%), poor communication (75.79%), mismatched expectations (77.89%), substance abuse (82.11%), extended family interference (83.16%), and early/forced marriages (67.36%) are the major contributors to divorce. Most divorces occurred within the first three years of marriage, while the most common age at first marriage was 20–25 years. The study recommends enhancing premarital counseling, financial literacy initiatives, and community education to foster healthy marital relationships.
