Abstract:
The study is aimed at examining Thu Dau Mot University’s English-majored students’ genuine needs for speaking English in classroom contexts. A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining a questionnaire with random interviews to obtain both quantitative and qualitative insights. The findings reveal that the students get involved in classroom speaking activities for various practical purposes. They include improvement of their linguistic competence, classroom interaction and communication requirements, academic achievement and future employment. On the basis of the findings, some solutions are suggested to help the students enhance their fluency in spoken English such as promoting student-centered and task-based speaking activities, varying speaking topics, increasing opportunities for authentic communication, and providing constructive feedback.
