Abstract:
Internationally mobile nursing students often enter host universities with strong academic motivation while simultaneously negotiating unfamiliar social, cultural, and educational environments. This study examined factors influencing the academic performance of nursing students who had been raised in foreign countries and were enrolled in a Philippine nursing program. A descriptive quantitative design and total-enumeration approach were used among 31 eligible students. A researcher-developed, expert-validated questionnaire assessed demographic characteristics, challenges encountered, and adjustment styles. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Most participants were aged 21 years or younger, were Level 3 students, and were female. Environmental change, homesickness, long lecture hours, language-related concerns, difficult subjects, and varied teaching experiences emerged as notable challenges. Social connection and family communication were prominent adjustment strategies, while tutorial classes and guidance counseling were used less frequently. Despite these challenges, all participants met the program's retention requirement. Findings support structured transition, language-sensitive teaching, peer and family support, proactive academic advising, and culturally responsive student services.
