Abstract: The article explores the current perceived state of circular economy adoption in Romanian small and medium-sized companies and their conceptualization of organizational excellence through the lens of environmental concerns. A survey of 52 companies from diverse sectors was conducted by means of a questionnaire, and the results obtained were analyzed for descriptive patterns suggesting possible conceptual associations between these areas. The results outline how the surveyed SMEs conceptualize circular economy practices, sustainability measures, and organizational excellence. Respondents mostly link circular economy to using resources efficiently, having skilled staff, receiving financial incentives, and improving their operations. However, due to the small non-probability sample and the exploratory nature of the questionnaire, the results should be construed as indicative patterns rather than conclusive evidence. The need for an advanced systemic strategy, support policies, resource management, and stakeholder engagement is discussed as a possible improvement route.
