Abstract:
Palangka Raya City has a population density of approximately 111 people/km², which contributes to high private vehicle mobility in the primary corridor of Jalan G. Obos – Temanggung Tilung – Galaksi Raya. The use of U-turn facilities on this road has reached saturation (DJ>0.85), leading to queues and congestion. Therefore, this research aimed to provide recommendations to improve the performance of the staggered intersection along this road through optimal geometric and traffic signal arrangements, based on the 2023 PKJI analysis and PTV VISSIM microsimulation. The analysis indicated that the current performance of the staggered intersection operates at Level of Service (LOS) B. However, the high volume of U-turn movements leads to saturation on the major roads (degree of saturation, DJ > 0.85). Traffic projections further suggest that increases in vehicle volume do not substantially affect overall intersection performance but instead increase congestion along the major roads. As a mitigation measure, Scenario 1 (geometric arrangement) is recommended as a short-term solution, while Scenario 3 Alternative 3 (geometric arrangement, three-phase Traffic Signal Lighting Devices (APILL), and opening the median at G. Obos–Temanggung Tilung Intersection) is recommended as a long-term solution to optimize traffic performance and anticipate vehicle growth.
