SPECIALISATION ET PRODUCTIVITES DES REGIONS EUROPEENNES

Guillaume Gaulier

Region et Developpement, 2003, vol. 17, 161-180

Abstract: This article attempts to analyze the structural changes in regional European spaces. It focuses on sectoral specialization and the concentration of activities. A generalized shift-share analysis is implemented in order to evaluate the impact of specialization on the convergence of regional productivity patterns. It is shown that there has been an increase in industrial concentration over the past two decades, whereas there has been a dispersion of the resources in Research and Development. Specialization has slightly favored a productivity catch-up of laggard regions.
