DYNAMIQUE DU PROCESSUS DE CONVERGENCE RÉGIONALE EN EUROPE

Sandy Dall'erba () and Julie Le Gallo

Region et Developpement, 2005, vol. 21, 119-139

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the evolution of the convergence process between 145 European regions over the period 1980-1999. In that purpose, we use the formal tools of spatial econometrics to identify and include the relevant spatial effects in the estimation of the appropriate conditional ß-convergence model for two sub-periods (1980-1989 and 1989-1999). While a spatial error model is the best specification for both periods, we detect spatial heterogeneity, in the form of structural instability and group wise heteroskedasticity, only for 1989-1999. These results highlight the formation of a convergence club between the peripheral regions of the European Union and a differentiation between the convergence process of the regions located in the core and the one of the regions located in the periphery.
