Abstract: This paper examines the evolution of technological specialization in 221 European regions over the period 1989-2000. The indicators of regional specialization rely on the structure of European patents in eight sections of the International Patent Classification (IPC). The results of empirical investigations show that (i) the regional innovation activities are highly specialized, although the degree of specialisation tends to decline over time. In particular, this evolution characterizes 130 of the 221 regions studied. (ii) According to the technological field, the geographical polarization of the activities is also important. A downward trend is noted in only three out of the eight sections of IPC. (iii) The modelling of Revealed Technological Advantage (RTA) and the assessment of a specification with spatial dependence taking into account regional effects emphasize a tendency to the mobility of the profiles of regional technological specialization.
