José Goldemberg: Professor José Goldemberg earned his Ph.D. in Physical Sciences from the University de São Paulo in 1954, where he became a full professor and served as rector from 1986 to 1990. A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has served as the president of the Brazilian Association for the Advancement of Science, as Brazil's Secretary of State for Science and Technology, and as Minister of State for Education. He has conducted research and taught at the University of Illinois, Stanford University of Paris (Orsay), and Princeton University. From 1998 to 2000, he chaired the World Energy Assessment for the U.N. Development Program. Between 2002 and 2006, he was Secretary for the Environment of the State of São Paulo. He has authored many technical papers and books on nuclear physics, sustainable development, and energy, and is the 2008 recipient of the Blue Planet Prize.
