Abstract: The recent World Summit on Sustainable Development once again has focused attention on the relationship between economic development and the state of the environment. Sustainable development remains a nebulous concept. Problems with its implementation and the trade-offs that arise often highlight differences in individual, national and international views of wellbeing.
