Lawyers, Economists, and Tax Scholarship

Daniel Shaviro

National Tax Journal, 2024, vol. 77, issue 3, 565 - 578

Abstract: Lawyers can make important contributions to the theory and practice of public finance, despite any lack of formal PhD-level training in public economics, if they keep in mind their own comparative advantages and disadvantages. Deploying institutional knowledge about the tax law and tax practice is among the promising dimensions for adding to knowledge in the field, but it is not the only one. In addition, being a generalist with independence of mind, a sound grasp of economic intuitions, and an eye for spotting intellectual arbitrage opportunities can empower one to improve economic analysis even within its four corners.
