Abstract: This paper discusses the views of Milton Friedman and Karl Polanyi on the relationship between economy and democracy. The goal is to seek a counterpoint to Friedman's assertion that the market economy is the only form of organization compatible with democracy. This is not, however, an exercise in social engineering, which seeks to combine economic organization and appropriate government forms, but to show that Friedman's conclusions are wrong because they are based in a fallacious conception of the relationship between the economy, the market and society. In other words, its economic liberalism incurs in of logical and conceptual errors alluded to by Polanyi, namely, reduces the scope of the economic to market phenomena and / or extends the domain of economic phenomena as to encompass other social phenomena.
