Abstract: The article presents the author's approach to the assessment of the spatial structure of the region in the context of the reform of the territorial unit taking into account the urbanization processes which methodical provisions are based on the concept of the supporting frame area, the theory of central places and settlement system. Author's approach, in contrast to existing ones, consider the effect of urbanization and provides for the definition of node and linear elements of the supporting frame area to identify the nature of his transformations, evaluation of the level of development of the territory, the ranking of cities, assess the level of administrative efficiency.
