Abstract: The increasing importance of manufacturing exports has led to the need to acquire a competitive edge in the exports of this sector. Vital components in the acquisition of competitiveness lies in human capital formation and skills development. Malaysia’s current net manpower requirements demonstrate an acute shortage in skilled labor which can impede her competitiveness in the international arena. Although current policies have recoguised this, nonetheless there is still a need to consider supplementary measures such as tracking technology trends in order to ascertain new skills required. Furthermore, inculcating a training culture as well as enhancing professionalism will undoubtedly help skills development. Lastly, industry associations can also contribute to training while a more flexible system of wage determination will improve labor’s contribution to increasing competitiveness.
