Abstract: In the late 1980s and the early 1990s. Malaysia’s economy has been growing rapidly at all average rate of 9 per cem per annum. Usually, physical capital and labour inputs are important basic factors contributing to economic growth. However, a mere dependence 011 these basic factors of production will not guarantee sustainable economic growth. Conversely all increase in productivity through human resource development (HRD) and technological advancement is crucial to sustain the growth of an economy. This paper attempts to analyse the extent contributed by education, a major component of HRD, to Malaysia ‘s economic growth for the period, 1970-1996. Two variables representing education, namely literacy rate and government expenditure on education. are utilized in the analysis. These factors are utilized in a production function logether with the basic factors, capital and labour. The function is then estimated using a regression model and ordinary least squares procedure to obtain the input coefficients for computing input elasticities. The values are used to calculate contribution of education as well as basic factors of production to the Malaysia ‘s economic growth for the duration of this study.
