Abstract: This paper empirically examines the determinants of the profitability and productivity of general insurance firms in Malaysia. The structure, Conduct and Performance (SCP) paradigm is used to estimate two main functions, i.e profitability and productivity function respectively. Panel data for the period of 2000-2012 and 50 insurance companies is used for determining the model estimation on productivity and profitability of general insurance firms, using the Two Stage Least Square (2SLS) method. Four main hypotheses, namely the SCP, the Relative Market Power (RMP), the EfficientStructure (ES) and the Market-Power (MP) are tested. The findings show that general insurance firms’ profit function has positive and significant influenced by insurers’ premium income, returns on investment and fixed assets turnover. Other variables such as market share, total assets turnover and insurance price have significant negative effect. In terms of the productivity functions, there is a significant positive relationship between return on assets, productivity management, market shares, commission agents and fixed asset turnover with the productivity functions. However, turnover total assets return on investment, labour productivity and price insurance have negative and significant relationships with firms’ productivity functions.
