Biofuels: Players and discussions in Latin America

Mariana Saidón ()

Economía, 2009, vol. 34, issue 27, 171-198

Abstract: This paper examines the debates within the existing map of players involved in the issue of bio fuels in Latin America, a region that appears to be a potential producer and user of this growing energy source. The study shows that these players agree –in varying degrees– or disagree, depending on their perspectives, their interests and capabilities in terms of power. Also, they make up a web of relationships that affect and influence their speeches. Because it is a specific field in construction, there are dynamic and open processes with alliances with different degrees of sustainability among the players and where the information appears as a crucial element to act, say and decide. The three aspects that often generate disparities in the main current discussions on bio fuels are economic, social and environmental.
