Abstract: This article contributes to the interpretation of the popular and solidarity economic of the peri-urban communes of Quito, through the study of the commune San José de Cocotog and guinea pig breeding. The results indicate that in this population the economy, culture and society are not des-imbricated, the commoner population articulates the tradition and modernity in their economic practices, besides, it is in a transition process where the reproduction of certain products, go to a production of mercantile economy simple. The methodology used was qualitative, essentially, the ethnographic method. We applied semi-structured interviews to commoners recognized as the largest producers the guinea pig, and we applied for a period of three months, the technique of participant observation.
