Economics and Climate Change: An economic analysis of mitigation decisions in Latin America

Abstract:
This article analyzes, from an economic development perspective, the negotiating position of countries in Latin America regarding the mitigation of climate change, focusing mainly on their determining factors and modifi cations during the last 20 years. A methodology of the systematic analysis of the declarations of countries involved in negotiations is being applied and developed with the fi nality of identifying a rupture in the position relating to the mitigation. Analyzing as well, the mechanisms of international governing and their willingness to participate in the International Climatic Architecture that could explain the observed changes, paying special a" ention to the implications for economic development, mitigation decisions and related policies.
