El sector agropecuario argentino: despegue, caida y resurgimiento (1875 Y 2005)

Estudios Economicos, 2006, vol. 023 (Nueva Serie), issue 47, 91-118

Abstract: This paper explores the evolution of agricultural production in Argentina between 1875 and 2005. An initial period (1875-1930) of explosive growth, lead by external demand, favourable commercial policies and a dynamic entrepreneurial class, was followed by several decades of stagnation and slow growth. This lost of interest in agriculture as a source of growth was the result of a combination of factors: the economic crisis of the 30s, the disruption of trade caused by World and II and the adoption of an import substitution model partially financed at the expense of agriculture (1930-1960). Agriculture slowly regained importance in the view of policymakers. The economic model adopted in 1990 induced the adoption of new technologies (biological, agronomic, organizational and chemical) which resulted in the formidable growth still in process
