Abstract:
The paper examines the principle terminology and the practical application of advanced development territories in Russia’s economy. It specifies the institutional and theoretical foundation of advanced development territories as an economic category, and proves the importance of this development tool from the perspective of the postulates of spatial economics and the concept of economic growth. The author distinguishes between advanced development territories of the 1st type (regions) and of the 2nd type (single-industry towns) and demonstrates that the Ural macroregion is one of the poles of the scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation. The author suggests dividing the Urals territory into five advanced development zones and describes their sectoral specifics and distinctive features. The paper reveals that in the Urals there is an opportunity to develop the triad “Industry – Science – Education” which represents the basis for sustainable growth within innovative economy.
