Izvestia Journal of the Union of Scientists - Varna. Economic Sciences Series, 2018, vol. 7, issue 1, 193-208

Abstract: Agriculture has untapped potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The use of this potential is an important priority for the sector to meet the growing environmental needs of society. The main points in the article are: there are serious ambitions from the climate mitigation sector; there is a wide range of environmental practices that can lead to a sustained reduction in emissions; it is necessary to strike a balance between the environmental and economic benefits of implementing greenhouse gas emission reduction measures without affecting the competitiveness of the sector; there is an objective need to increase the role of monitoring the sector in relation to greenhouse gas reduction; identifies the need to increase environmental responsibility for farmers, which requires them to increase their awareness; the implementation of climate-friendly environmental practices requires significant resources, which determines the need to continue the financial support for the sector under the Common Agricultural Policy; the role of the agrarian sector in offsetting carbon emissions from other sectors of the economy is growing. In this sense, the article aims to explore the climate change mitigation potential of the sector and to propose policy actions in this context in the context of international climate agreements while maintaining the competitiveness of the sector.
