Abstract: The paper describes from a regional perspective the state of production and the markets for organic products in nineteen Central and South-eastern European countries. These markets share a number of common features: from customers' attitudes and levels of income, through production and distribution patterns, to export orientation. The article provides a review of the determinants of demand for organic products and presents the powerful drivers behind them. It checks the validity of global trends in the regional context. The scale of production and the underlying developments are outlined. The market is explored in terms of size, growth rates and expenditures per person. The competitive environment of several key markets in the region is examined, which generates insights for future expansion of the trade in organic products in Central and South-eastern Europe.
