Using the TOPSIS Method to Evaluate Projects for Virtualization

Abstract:
The study focuses on six Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods, examines the characteristics of the methods, their advantages and disadvantages, fields of application. Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method is studied and used. The procedure for implementing the step-by-step method is presented. Practical application of TOPSIS method is made in a situation when selecting a solution for virtualization of IT infrastructure in a sample company. The choice is among several possible alternative options for the deployment of desktop virtualization. Criteria, weights and points are defined by experts for each one of them. As a result, the ranking of the alternative options is obtained and used to select the best one. The conclusion is that using TOPSIS method allows the determination of a best alternative in a clear and easy way.
