Abstract: The paper deals with the historical development of Department "General Economic Theory" and is dedicated to its 80th anniversary. The Department is established in 1937 as part of the Varna University of Economics (at that time Higher Commercial School). The author identifies three periods in the development of the Department: from the establishment of the Department until the beginning of World War II, from the end of WWII until 1989, and from 1990 to the present. The three periods are analyzed and critically assessed. The author points out the accomplishments as well as some shortcomings in the activity of the Department during the periods under discussion.
