Abstract: The promotion of sustainable development and water management is among the main objectives of the Water Framework Directive and as well as the new EU Common Agricultural Policy. This requires both efficient use of water resources and reduction of the harmful effects of human activities, including agriculture. From this perspective, based on the production trends over the last ten years, the report assesses the opportunities and challenges for self-sufficient production of four major vegetable crops in Bulgaria by optimizing the use of water resources.
