Economic Science, education and the real economy: Development and interactions in the digital age, 2020, issue 1, 669-680

Abstract: United Nation‘s Goal 12: ?Sustainable consumption and production? (SCP), is about sustainable growth by doing more with less in order to protect the environment and save essential natural resources such as water, energy and food from depletion. This paper explores existing SCP policies and initiatives aimed at sustainable growth by stimulating demand and supply of environmentally-friendly products and thus supporting the transition to the circular and green economy. Information from strategic documents, programs, national development plans, reports, announcements and statistical data of official institutions is used to create a conceptual framework for mainstreaming and measuring SCP. The case of Bulgaria is evaluated with the conclusion that, although the country‘s policies and initiatives are in line with the global ones, the country still lags behind the rest of the European countries in terms of SCP performance.
