The Market – Social Good And/Or Social Evil

Velcho Stoyanov

Business & Management Compass, 2010, issue 3, 21-33

Abstract: The market indisputably is a „great social mechanism” (after Al Gore), but it also posse sses great weaknesses. From the positions of the „great dialectic” (after R. Tarnas) that is quite natural and normal. It is to the credit of the universally recognized ideologist of the market A. Smith, that he had seen not only its greatness, but also sp otted and outlined its main negative aspects and manifestations. The attempts at idealizing and absolutizing the market mechanism turn its functioning into an inexorable law of nature. This disregards the moral - spiritual nature of man, instigates spiritual - cultural crisis and leads to zoologization of the people. L. Pole claims that socialism - communism eventually leads inevitably to the primary instincts. However, that’s also the place where we are eventually lead by the idealized and absolutized market, ac ting with the force of a law of nature. Therefore the acceptable formula should include the threesome: market, state and morality.
