Comparative Analysis of Domestic and Foreign-Owned Firms in the Bulgarian Economy

Abstract:
Given the importance of foreign direct investment, the paper compares the performance of domestic and foreign-owned firms in the various sectors of the Bulgarian economy. First, a brief literature review about the impact of foreign ownership on firm’s performance is conducted. Second, based on Eurostat data for the period 2009-2019, the paper outlines the importance of foreign-owned firms for the turnover, value added, employment and investment activity in the different sectors of the economy. Third, domestic and foreign-owned firms are compared in terms of their average personnel costs, labour productivity and gross operating rate.
