Abstract: In classical economic theory, the question of obtaining land rent is particularly relevant. One of the notable debates in economics between David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus was about rent of land. The subject of rent almost disappeared from economic theory after the marginal revolution, when the theory of economic rent was adopted. The receipt of rent not only does not arise, as some economists assume, but also becomes a basic characteristic of the modern economic system. The purpose of the paper is to present alternative modern views of economic rent that are based on the insights of classical economists.
