Abstract:
Aquatic foods are among the most widely traded food commodities globally. The diversity of aquatic species targeted for food is far greater than that found in agriculture worldwide. Aquaculture currently accounts for more than half of the supply and is gradually replacing wild capture. The growing demand for seafood and the sector’s complex international supply chains however exert pressure towards homogenisation of market preferences. This study examines recent trends in trade concentration and diversity of aquatic foods. It focuses on a small sample of countries in Southeastern Europe, a region which is not a major consumption hub but nonetheless well-integrated into the global seafood market. The results of the study highlight developments in the countries’ aquatic food trade and identify potential risk areas.
