Abstract:
The Covid-19 crisis has triggered fundamental shifts in the global economy, with major changes taking place in two areas - the working environment with the exploding shares of distance workers and social policy with the big efforts to fight temporary unemployment. The aftermath of the crisis is marked by substantial increases in inflation and the need to limit government expenditures. In this paper, explored are the efforts of the governments in the Balkans to balance between limiting the acceleration of the inflation and matching the goals of the fiscal aspects of prudent macroeconomic policy. Our general interest is in the impact of direct taxation, since it reflects fairly well the ability or inability of the government to cover its expenditures with local revenues. Relying to a greater extent to indirect taxation limits the room for maneuver of the governments, and this appears as a global trend.
