Abstract:
This document outlines the characteristics of variability in the total sulphur content of 29 bituminous coal seams from the Pniówek and Zofiówka deposits. These deposits occur in the Zofiówka Monocline - a primary resource base for Polish coking coals. The coal seams chosen for study include the Saddle, Ruda, Załęże, and Orzesze beds ranging from Namurian B to Wetphalian A. Characterizing the variability in total sulphur content was accomplished on the basis of 2,730 samples, where the content of Std was determined in 1,674 of the samples. Elementary statistical analysis was conducted. The number of samples, minimum, maximum, and mean value of Std were determined in every analyzed coal seam. The variability of total sulphur content was observed in vertical (with depth) and horizontal (in E-W and N-S) directions. Contour maps of total sulphur content for all studied coal seams were also generated. Results have shown that total sulphur content in the analyzed coal seams from the Zofiówka Monocline varies from 0.21% Stdin coal seam No 406/1 to 2.18% Std in coal seam No 361. The average content of total sulphur in the deposits of the Zofiówka Monocline is 0.65% Std. No general tendency of variability in the total sulfur content was indicated. In each of the studied coal seams, a different character of variability in total sulphur content was observed. The results were obtained within the framework of the research project “Smart coke plant fulfilling requirements of the best available technology”, implemented since 2008 and financed by the funds of POIG (Innovative Economy Operational Program).
